Job type: Permanent, Full time

Location: Kingston, London

£23997 - £25659

Recruiter: Kingston University Services Company Ltd (KUSCO)

Sector: Corporate Security

Job description

The Security Officer is part of a team that ensures the safety and security of property and persons throughout Kingston University, including five separate Halls of Residence where between 200 and 720 first year students live per unit. This also includes dealing with anti-social behaviour within targeted areas/streets adjacent to Kingston University property. The job mainly involves being the first line of response to incidents varying from first aid to public order and crime. For a large part of the job the Security Officer may be the only person on any particular site, although back-up is always available from the mobile Shift Supervisor.  Good record keeping is essential as is the ability to re-prioritise tasks. The job demands patience and common sense, and capacity to spot trouble early and to find ways of de-fusing it, as well as the capacity to communicate effectively. Doing this work well is all about team working, and understanding the responsibility to act appropriately under stress. Respect and maintenance of confidentiality is essential.

The work is carried out over all University sites.  There are in total over 36 Security Officers, working in two teams, on a four on four off shift pattern, with a duty Supervisor in charge of each shift who provide first-line management and support.

The role of Security Officer involves operating as part of the KUSCO Team, and so requires a positive, flexible, customer-oriented attitude to the work.  It also involves supporting the company’s image by talking about it in a positive light, promoting improvements to working practices which are beneficial to the company’s long and short term business strategy and adopting a quality approach to all aspects of work and encourage others to achieve high standards.

The Security Officer is required to operate flexible hours, as 24 hour 365 day a year cover is provided by this service to multiple sites, which means that changes to regular working patterns may be necessary.
